The Boeing Co. this week announced a new order for 787 Dreamliners that will help drive additional work on the jet program in Wichita.

The new order comes from United Airlines, which has agreed to buy nine new 787-9s in a deal valued at $2.53 billion at list prices.

The order, which pushes Boeing’s (NYSE: BA), net orders for the 787 to more than 100 for the year, means work in Wichita where Spirit AeroSystems Inc. builds the complete forward composite fuselage and other components on the 787.

Boeing said in a press release that United (NYSE: UAL) has now ordered a total of 64 of the wide-body aircraft.

The Dreamliner is currently built at the rate of 12 aircraft per month, with plans for that to increase to 14 per month next year.

Elsewhere in the industry this week came news that budget carrier Primera Air would be ceasing operations and filing for bankruptcy in a decision that at least initially cast some doubt about the future of Wichita-centered production on some of its fleet.

The European airline blamed the move, which left tens of thousands of passengers stranded worldwide, on late arriving aircraft deliveries from Boeing rival Airbus and an inability to secure long-term financing.

The carrier still had orders for both Airbus and Boeing aircraft, which in the latter included orders and planned lease agreements for up to 20 737 MAX 9s.

Spirit (NYSE: SPR) builds about 70 percent of every 737 in Wichita.

However, analyst Dhierin Bechai, writing about Primera for investment website Seeking Alpha, suspects that both the manufacturers and leasing companies will have little trouble finding new customers for those planned delivery slots because of the ongoing global demand for commercial aircraft. And that, in turn, means a low likelihood of any lost 737 work for Spirit.

“For Boeing and Airbus, we don’t see any big consequences,” Bechai says.
