April is Autism Awareness Month and Tuesday the 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day. Across the globe people are wearing the color blue to raise awareness for the increasing prevalence of this developmental disorder.
World Autism Awareness Day is an Internationally recognized event where the United Nations reaffirms its “commitment to promote the full participation of all people with autism, and ensure they have the necessary support to be able to exercise their rights and fundamental freedoms.”
Various building and landmarks around the world will light up in the color blue Tuesday to raise awareness as well. The White House, the Empire State Building and Niagara Falls have all been lit blue on this day in years’ past.
More than 3.5 million American fall somewhere on the autism spectrum and about 1 in 68 children in the US will diagnosed this year, according to the CDC. Autism is generally diagnosed before the age of 3, with markers ranging anywhere from an inability to socialize to being non-verbal. Children and adults often have severe sensory issues and sensitivities to noise, light, and even food. Many families struggle with the financial burden having a child with autism brings and rely on organizations such as Autism Speaks to provide the much needed therapy and medical care these children desperately need. Early intervention is key in providing optimal progress however a majority of adults with autism still need intensive care depending on the severity of the disorder.
If you would like to show your support for autism awareness on your social media accounts, you can use these pre-written tweets and post hashtags #LightItUpBlue or #WorldAutismAwareness2019, or even turn your Facebook profile picture blue for the day.
